2024 FPC Waco & Arts

First Presbyterian Church of Waco and art go hand in hand; with several members and staff practicing art as a disciple of their spiritual lives. Our commitment to the creative process is exemplified in our Art Show (sign-up below), work with local nonprofit Creative Waco (Chalk Waco), and our recently finished art and spirituality collective, Creature's heART (see below). Please, take some time to see what is being created in our walls and the community.

First Presbyterian Church

Art Show

Our yearly art show runs through February. The halls of our church get filled with wonderous creations from all our congregants and community members. If you are interested, stay tuned for next year's art show, but take a moment and enjoy what has been done over the past several years below!

Upcycling

Our Commitment as an Earth Care Congregation

How did this come about...

In an age of online and cloud storage for documents, First Presbyterian had lots of extra file cabinets on our campus.  We researched and learned how to upcycle the cabinets to planters.  Jerry Barrett carefully deconstructed and reconstructed the cabinets - recycling the drawers entirely.
The product is an artsy message to our community.  At First Presbyterian, we playfully and purposefully engage ways of honoring our past for current environmental challenge.

Our turquoise table is an invitation of hospitality to all the community.

Why does this matter?

"The hunch I have is that art is a vital tool for the development and exploration of well-being and spirituality. It not only brings us closer to ourselves but also to our Creator; allowing us to use our bodies and minds to explore the depths of our realities." - Rev. Parker Lucas

What happened?

Through four semesters of Creature's heART, an art collective of community members, different mediums were explored (charcoal, acrylic, pottery, wire sculptures, chime making, juju dolls, stitching, etc.). The different mediums were avenues the group traveled down as they wrestled with their well-being and spirituality through the language of art while being bolstered and uplifted by the community around them. Through twenty-four sessions, the collective grew from five to eighteen members and developed a culture of curiosity and wonderment about art, themselves, and one another.
