How to Join Our Congregation

First Presbyterian Church is a regional fellowship with a diversity of views and commitments united by our belief in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. We seek to minister with acceptance and love to each other and to the larger community around us. We worship God, learn and teach the Christian faith, and provide opportunities for nurture, fellowship, prayer and service.

The incarnation of God in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives to the church not only its mission but also its understanding of membership. One becomes an active member of the church through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and acceptance of his Lordship in all of life. Baptism and a public profession of faith in Jesus as Lord are the visible signs of entrance into the active membership of the church.

We welcome all who respond in trust and obedience to God’s grace in Jesus Christ. No one will be denied membership because of race, ethnic origin, worldly condition, or any other reason not related to profession of faith. If you feel called into the life and ministry of this church, you may become a member of our congregation by profession of faith, reaffirmation of faith, or transfer of church letter.

Profession of faith - This option also applies to those who were baptized as children and are ready to make public their profession of faith and accept their responsibility in the life of the church. It also applies to those who have not received the sacrament of baptism. Baptism into the fellowship of Christ is required of all who are accepted into the membership of the Presbyterian Church. Obeying the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, and confident of his promises, we baptize those whom God has called. It is in baptism that God claims us and seals us to show we belong to God. Please contact the pastors for more information about joining by profession of faith or about being baptized.

Reaffirmation of faith - Our church accepts all previous baptisms into the Christian faith, whether by sprinkling or immersion. If you have been previously baptized and wish to reaffirm your commitment to supporting the ministry of the church, you may join the congregation by reaffirmation of faith.

Transfer of church letter - If you are joining our church after having been an active member in another congregation, you may simply transfer your membership from that congregation to ours.

By joining our congregation, you either affirm or reaffirm these questions asked at baptism:

Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?

Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior, trusting in his grace and love?

Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love?

If you are interested in joining our congregation, please contact our pastor, Jimmie Johnson (jjohnson@firstpreswaco.org) in the Church Office, 254-752-1665, for membership information. Visitor cards may also be completed and placed in the offering plate during morning worship each Sunday.
